Hot and humid conditions down at the Meadows last night which made things difficult for some last night (not all though, 3 runners were under 16 minutes).
One lesson I learnt was I don't cope too well in the heat and need to hold back a bit more in the first half. Also learnt that eating a full meal 50 minutes before the start is not very clever! - my only excuse being I wasn't planning to run at that time.

There were two conflicting forecasts for the West, clear sunny and hot (according to Gail) or the mountain weather one of low persistent hill fog. Guess which one it was? Of course, the hills were shrouded in low cloud, but at least it was mild, but muggy and midge hell at the start. So on with the shoes and the DEET! There were 96 starters for this SHR championship 'long' but only 73 finishers, with many getting lost due to navigational errors, and subsequently retiring from the race.
This really is a classic mountain run of 22k over 4 Munros with 2400m ascent, most of which follows the gentle introduction in the approach to Loch Sloy dam. Ben Vorlich is the first big ascent, following the steep Munro path that leads to the summit ridge, so not too hard to find the first checkpoint? Well the group I was with went straight there but with viz down to 20m several others missed it, going to the trig point rather than the summit cairn as specified. The descent from Vorlich... After an enjoyable outing with Pa at Kinoull a few weeks ago and Seven Hills safely banished from near memory i headed up to The Pentlands to run this HBT fledgling affair in its 3rd year. Phyllis, Dad and Bruce completed the CAAC representation past and present.
Starting right by Red Moss car park the route very quickly took in a large climb at The Beeches, im sure i wasnt alone in thinking this was quite abrupt for a race start, but it did stop any crazy pace being set in the first mile! After that the incline wasnt as aggressive but kept rising all the way to the top of Hare Hill. It was a great night for it, still and warm but unfortunately also a great night for midges hanging around for any view wasnt an option. A bouncy heather steady descent broke to a severe but easily runnable descent to the Green Cleuch before an equally severe rise to the contouring path round Black Hill, for me it required walking. After that it became really runnable with a slight descent... [Read More]

| 7 Hills Completes Busy Weekend for CAAC |
|

Is this the busiest weekend of the year? National Track Champs, Eildons, Lairig Ghru, Highland Cross, East Kilbride Half and now...the 7 Hills.
I am a 7 Hills virgin no more! For years I've wanted to do this race but it always seemed to coincide with the come down (injury) after a marathon, or clash with another race deemed more important at the time.
However, this year I decided to give it a bash and although I've been doing a lot of races lately (this was my 14th in 7weeks) I have been pretty light on training and done virtually no mileage or hills all year. Hmmm, was this the best preapration for a distance race over hills? Judge for yourself.
All week I'd been planning to go down Johnston Terrace from the Castle (thinking it more runnable, albeit longer) but getting to the Esplanade in second I bottled it and followed the leader through the gate. This was the only bit of the course I hadn't recce'd and neither had Andrew Wright... [Read More]

Looks like Tommy Hepburn ( unoficially ) finished the WHW in 19th Place in 20 hr 55mins.
Phenomenal!

He may wish to give us an insight as to the race ( once his legs are talking to each other )- It might be a LONG post.
( Nick , inspired for next year ? )

Well what can I say another busy weekend for CAAC. Nick out for a tough 28 miler, several CAACers doing 18 miles over 7 hills and 5 very foolish ones doing 20 miles followed by a 30 mile bike ride......... It's reassuring to know we are not the only mad ones!
This was definitely one of the toughest things I have done. Luckily enough I was surrounded by a couple of old pro's and a couple of fellow novices. The pro's told us what to expect and reassured us that it wasn't really all that difficult. They also suggested that we would stick together for the first 4 miles until the 1000ft ascent! My concept of sticking together seemed to differ slightly from coach Dave's or Keith's though as they disappeared into the distance.... still I can't say that I worried whether the oldecartehorse or Peter were just behind me...It's the CAAC way!
After 4 miles there is a long climb up all this is on a small track and all the rain lately meant that the paths were... [Read More]

| Eildons 2 Hills Race |

I thought I'd add Melrose in the Borders to list of many places where CAAC athletes are competing this weekend. The race starts from the Greenyards, Melrose RFC, up through Melrose high street and then onto the Eildons where you have to reach the top of the 2 biggest ones before heading back down into Melrose to Finish at the Rugby club.
Half way up the first climb I remembered how much I hate hill running, slogging with hands on knees up through thick heather in the fissing rain ;-) !!! However once I got the first hill out the way I enjoyed the drop down the saddle then then next climb didn't feel to bad. I found my descenting could have been much better, felt a bit cautions but once I got down onto the road I managed to get going again and nabbed a few places before the finish. I ran the course in 37:11 and came 22nd out of 71 so pretty pleased with my first hill run for a while. I haven't a clue how long, or high the course was.
Tea, Coffee,... [Read More]
