Round the Grounds

Thought it was about time to put a pair of trainers on and do some running after a months injury lay off and the Heriot watt Rounds the Grounds race sounded like an ideal one to start back on.

Before the start the heavy rain turned into nice thick wet snow for the brave 26 runners taking part in todays race.  The course is a really nice trail run through the various paths around the university and the snow made it even more fun.  This was pretty much a "see how the leg feels" race so I just relaxed and enjoyed and nice snowy jog finished in a comfortable 22:15mins.

National Road Relays

The National Road Relay Championships take place on Sunday 31st March at the usual Livingston location (although I think there may have been one or two minor changes to the route) and the entries close on 18th March .

Devilla 15k Trail Race

So after plodding around Callendar Park yesterday, to day was a trail run. I made my way to Kincardine feeling a bit weary and with  a few aching muscles. Still I was kind of look forward to this one - a trail run through the forests behind the police academy sounded nice. I decided that a fairly decent warm up was required to get the stiff muscles going. It all did feel a bit creaky and I wondered whether 15k throughout the woods was going to be a good idea. Still once the race proper started I soon forgot about any soreness and got into the race.

National XC Championships 2012-13

Well done to everyone who ran yesterday! I had a great time shouting at the senior women - all of it very encouraging and positive of course........ They returned the favour as I struggled round the 3 laps. I think at some point a grimace was mistaken for a smile..... Started from the back as usual and because this is a race full of extremely decent runners ended up at the back too! Enjoyed  the battle to catch up with Martin Caldwell which I just managed on the third hill. Some brilliant running by the senior women.

Borders XC Final Race

After yesterday's excitement I was worried that the last the last race of the Borders XC series was going to be a bit of an anti-climax. Gillian and Dean had decided that they had done enough running yesterday and decided to stay at home to rest their weary legs and hopefully a bit of extra navigational studying........ Fiona had decided that she was going to give this last race a shot and her mood had improved considerably as her Devils Burden Team had not been disqualified and they ended up a very creditable 16th. [score change Devils Burden 1 - CAAC 1].

Devils Burden - lost in the mist

Another weekend another race or two. Alex had been press ganged in pick me up and what seemed to be before the crack of dawn for Joanna. She reckons we are all bonkers - I think she might have a point....... The chat in the car was about races and Ruth was well impressed that I was running my next race in Ghana!?  She used to be such a nice girl before she started seeing that Scott now she seems so intolerant of foreign accents......

Forfar Multi Terrain Half Marathon

She who makes a lovely cup of tea had decided that a warm house was much preferred to a cold day somewhere up north. Can't say that I could blame her............., much. I set off to Forfar knowing that this was a brilliant race - well Fiona had told me so and I had no reason not to believe her........., much. The half would be a good test to see whether the slow runs home and long runs were having the desired effect. So after a windy drive up to Forfar and a walk around the Forfar Industrial Estate I found the Strathmore Rugby Club.

Thursday Night Running Development group

If you're trying to get back into training after the new year, are coming back from injury or are new to club running, just a wee reminder that I will be taking a running (development) group on a Thursday night with a mixture of long runs (at a more gentle pace), hill reps, intervals, speed work and stretching.
See you there,
Gillian

CAAC on the Arabian Peninsula

Since coming to Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates to teach for a couple of years, I’ve been keeping active playing rugby and doing a spot of running. In September I took the plunge of entering the Dubai marathon, thinking it would be rude not to while I’m in this neck of the woods!

Feel the Burns

There aren’t enough winter hill races in the calendar, I say. They’re much more unpredictable than their summer cousins and the potential hazards could put organisers off. But thankfully not the organisers of ‘Feel the Burns’. This was an expertly contrived and executed event offering top notch registration and changing facilities (Selkirk Rugby Club), a fine post race feast (soup, haggis, tea and cake), and a fast but challenging course taking in the Three Brethren and a section of the Southern Upland Way.
