Promathon

Quite a few of our top athletes were running this one or using the fact that the run was in Portobello as an excuse to have a long run and come and watch the race. I reckon if you bother to come all the way from West Edinburgh to come and have a look you might as well run it........ Keith, COB, Mickey, Alex, Dave P?

I had decided that I should give this one another shot having enjoyed my first Promathon last year in the icy cold. A few beers the night before might not have been the best preparation but by the time the race started I was feeling in fine fettle and wasn't worried by the fact it is only 4 miles at a quick pace - not normally my favourite.  Whilst Grant had been focusing for the last 30 minutes - OCH had decided he would be the last person to sign up for this race by turning up fashionably late. I had decided I would run from the back as usual and see how things would unfold........the OCH decided to join me.

I set off on a steady pace and even managed to say hello to Alex and Dave P on my way out.  I could see all of our top performers on their way back as I was still making my way to the turn. No real surprises there. The only real surprise was that 'she who makes a lovely cup of tea' had promised some cheerleading and back flips to keep the runners entertained. I must have missed the back flips but could definitely hear the 'one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, who do we appreciate' - never quite found out who it was though......

The last mile seemed to last a lot longer then the first three but the finish did eventually appear and there it was - the first race of 2012 finished. Some great performances with Dermot breaking 20 minutes in 4th places and Grant only staying just above 21 minutes to get 2nd Vet. With 4 in the top ten a very strong showing by CAAC. Even Tim ran quite well.....

4 Dermot Cummins 19.34
6 Kris Berry 20.12
8 Bryan Clark 20.43
10 Grant Wilkie 21.04
27 Mike Anderson 22.31
40 Ian Johnstone 23.35
42 Tim Norwood 23.38
69 Chris Peggie 24.54
103 Jan Van den Berg 26.09
158 Dave Law (SV) 28.35
217 Connor Johnstone 30.19
230 Helena Nolan 30.46
231 Ron Nolan 30.49

Its all Morays fault! He is always looking for consistency in his squad. That must be the explanation.

This year BC ran the promathon in the same time as last year give or take a second and so did Grant. BC went to the extreme though and came in the same place as last year too.

But thats not the big news this year. What about that Anderson man? Mike has taken 2 minutes off his time every time he runs the promathon. (26m48 in 2007, 24m in 2009 and now 22min and a bit this year. )  Well done lad.

And finally I think we have a new club record holder in Dermot. His time definately beats Paul O'Brien's 19m37s and Graham McLean's 19m40s but is just a wee bit short of the Carthorses 19m6s. The word to note is "short" as these stalwarts ran the shortened course in 1993. So congrats Dermot - thats another record under the belt.

And for those of you old enough to remember, 1993 was the first year we had a winner at the Promathon. Way back then COB was an U15 and won the 2-mile race in 11m28s.

This is good stuff Bob. Good to see your not retiring you stats reports yet.

JB your report was acutely observant as usual. I was quite please with my efforts. I seemed to be in a lot of pain when i woke the next day but that was partly due to falling and sliding down the storm barrier after the race. But luckly only a few dozen people noticed.
