Where in the world have we (not) been?
I was clearing out some old paperwork and found an ancient CAAC newsletter. Its so old it was before the days of CAAC ATAK. It had an article by Rupert about his Boston Marathon (he ran 3h55m24s in April 96 by the way - and it is not in the power of CAAC). It got me thinking about all the wonderful places that club runners have been to.
It’s getting hard to find any part of the world where a CAACer has not raced. There cannot be a hill in Scotland where Martin the mountain goat has not run or a wet field where the Carthorse has not done a cross-country. And if you combine them in things like the Deerstalker then Nick will have done it.
The rest of the UK has been covered fairly well with AAA champs, BMC meetings and various Cross Country races and, of course, the Hodgo. We also have had loads of people do the London Marathon and our own Megan and Fraser even did the mini-marathon there. Then we have had the strange ones like Corries attempt to “Race the train” and the Eyam Half Marathon which Tommo thought he could hide from me. Our tame Irishman has also ensured we have had a CAAC vest in most of the Emerald Isle.
If we head for the continent then it is well covered too with hordes of people (and even Jan-Bert) having done something in Holland. Who can ever forget (or even pronounce) Zevenheuvelenloop. France - we had the Paris marathon, Spain - the Palma half, Norway - the Midnight Sun Marathon in Tromsø, Denmark - the beautifully named Bagsvaerd Lake 10K, Germany - the Berlin Marathon and 10K , Croatia - Ston Marathon and 15km raceand in Italy - the Florence Marathon. Not to be outdone our sprinters also headed for foreign parts with Ronnie running in Hungary last year. And our juniors got in on the act too with Dougie running in the Aalborg Youth Games way back when he was U17 and Megan taking part in the Black Forest Teenager Games in Germany at the same agegroup.
Apart from The Boston Marathon we have also had runners in the New York marathon and the Carthorse ran the Toronto Waterfront Marathon in Canada so that’s North America covered. Then there is South America but that’s been done too with the Brazil Night Trail Run. Australia we had Sri Chinmoy Yarra Boulevard in Melbourne and Asia we had King of the Road Indonesia in Jakarta.
I can’t find anything in Africa but I am probably not looking properly.
So the challenge for 2012 is to find a new country to race in and I will talk nicely to Moray and get you double bonus points in the “well travelled” category.

Good report Bob. there are a few caac'ers who have been to south africa so one of them have probably done something like the comrads? I know martin has been on table top mountain maybe as a race? For the adventure section, maybe should look at the sahara marathons! For me a local race would be good!

I'm claiming New Zealand. 'Long arm run' in Queenstown and the 'Mount Vernon Grand Traverse' in Blenheim and some sort of 12k run in Gore. Cob and I are claiming Aalborg too!

You can add cross country races in Madrid and Cologne in Germany which I have run in.
Are we only counting races though? When in Basle, Switzerland I did a run where I crossed the bridge past the armed border control who were checking drivers passports and ran into Germany, along the river Rhine and then across another bridge and back along the Swiss side.

Gillian and I have run the Budapest 1/2 Marathon, the Mallorca Half Marathon, the Amsterdam Half Marathon, plus plenty of races on the Outer Hebrides (Barra, Harris, Stornoway, Skye) and Mull (Inner Hebrides)
