Devils Burdens Relay

Indeed, well remembered OCH. Closing date for entries is 19th January so if all interested in running could let me know at chris@caac.org.uk or by posting here by Monday 16th latest.

Route has remained the same as last few years, teams consist of 6 runners running 4 legs, 2 in pairs and 2 solo. Terrain is mixed although it would be fair to say leg 4 is no more than a trail run on a good path so open to those not so confident in the hills too!

Essentially something for everyone.

For more details please see the Fife AC website at http://bcruickshank.brinkster.net/page11.htm

Devils Burdens Relay 2012

Sorry Cob and Jan I'll have to withdraw from the race as I'll just have finished my antibiotics on Friday so I don't think it will be wise to run  the day after. I need to get myself sorted out for the Masters and the Nationals.
Apologies.

Wise decision Coach we need you just right for the Masters and Nationals. Now CoB whatever you do in the reshaping of the top team don't put me on leg 2 - I am really really rubbish at running down steep hills.......  bit better going up them.......

Good to see nearly 3 teams! After my wee trot round Broxburn delights, I'm please to say that my left ankle has survived and should be fine for Saturdays race. However, i took Broxburn tentatively, especially  on the rough, and hard .ground
Looking at the routes, I am happy to run(trot) anything, but I'm not the fastest I've been. Leg 2 looks a good 'easier' option, but that depends on the terrain? Any advise here? As much trail is best, tuff heathery un-even is going to slow me more!

Team cars as space is at a premium up there.I know of 2 cars thus far sure there will be more options? We'll need 4 for getting there and 3 (1 per team) for getting your team members round the course.

Please hand your driver some cash for petrol im sure they would most appreciate it!

Team captains please register your team(s) on the day of the event at the Village Hall in Falkland, which is situated within the main car park in Falkland. Make sure the rules in respect of protective clothing etc are adhered to; a kit inspection is a distinct possibility this year. It is required that teams organise transport of their runners to and from the changeover points by sharing a vehicle in an effort to keep the number of cars at each changeover to a minimum. Eleanor Gunstone has agreed to be referee for the event: her decision in respect of any dispute/ query will be final.

After the race, soup, rolls and drinks will be available in the Village Hall where the prize giving will take place for the prescribed categories.

IMPORTANT CLARIFICATIONS: ASSUMING WE CAN USE THE USUAL COURSE

Various landowners and farmers have expressed reservations concerning the potential for damage to fencing and walls as competitors cross their boundaries. Please remember that this course has been designed to follow the rights of way and if you are climbing a wall you are off course. Thus: -

Leg 1: Everyone must run through the Lime Kilns. There is to be no climbing the fence into the field on the west side of this area.

Leg 2: The checkpoint is at the top of the firebreak: this is basically to ensure that everyone goes to the top of the firebreak and does not follow the road to the “golf-ball”.

Leg 3: The introduction of the checkpoint on the gate prior to the Bishop was specifically placed to ensure that this boundary is crossed via the gate.

Leg 4: This will be marked and everyone MUST run the marked course. No deviations will be allowed: the Falkland Estate is one of the most sensitive of owners and the course is subject to their approval. PLEASE NOTE, THE FINISH WILL BE AT THE DUCKPOND IN FALKLAND ESTATE.

Generally: use the stiles and gates wherever possible and be as considerate as possible in the parking of team vehicles. To protect the future of the race, any team transgressing the above will be subject to disqualification. PLEASE KEEP ALL DOGS ON A LEAD; there is invariably sheep on the hills.

POINTS OF INFORMATION

Leg 1: The first part of the ascent of East Lomond will be marked: after you’ve climbed the first flight of stairs there is a path off to the right that leads to a small clearing from which a wide firebreak zigzags up the hill to another larger clearing where a small path leads to a point that is nearly at the top of the stairs.

Leg 2: There is one number in your set marked in or in RED and the second leg runners must wear this in an attempt to avoid the confusion for timekeepers at the first and second changeovers. Please stress to your team members that FIRST LEG RUNNERS MUST FINISH TOGETHER OR BE DISQUALIFIED.

Parking for the second changeover at Scotlandwell:

· DO NOT IN ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, PARK ON THE MAIN ROAD BETWEEN SCOTLANDWELL AND KINNESSWOOD
· DO NOT IN ANY CIRCUMSTANCES PARK IN THE CARPARK FOR THE VILLAGE HALL

ANY TRANSGRESSION OF THE FOREGOING WILL LEAD TO IMMEDIATE DISQUALIFICATION. THIS ROAD WILL BE CONED WITH “NO WAITING" SIGNS AND PATROLLED BY THE POLICE. YOU WILL RECEIVE A PARKING TICKET AND A FINE. THIS HAS BEEN THE SUBJECT OF A COMPLAINT TO THE COUNCIL FOLLOWING LAST YEAR’S RACE, WHICH WAS THEN PASSED TO THE LOCAL POLICE. THESE ARE THE CONDITIONS ACCEPTABLE TO THE POLICE: FAILURE TO COMPLY WILL MEAN THE END OF THE RACE IN ITS PRESENT FORM.

OPTIONS:
1. There is a car park at the Church.
2. Thanks to the generosity of local businessman, Brian Moore of the Lomond Hill Runners, parking will be allowed on his building site on the road to Portmoak. There is space in front of the Sales Office and on the site itself where there is a hard standing and access road. The area will be signed “CAR PARK”.
3. There is a car park in Kinnesswood adjacent to the Primary School and a small play park.
4. Considerate street parking in both villages.

Changeover 3 at Strathmiglo: Again we have the use of the field to the east of the path, which will give the leg 4 runners an area off road to await their teammates on Leg 3. The last section of leg 3 will be marked through the field to give the leg 4 runners a sight of the incoming runners and to avoid any clash between the incoming and out-going competitors.

We look forward to seeing everyone on the day.

Latest forecast for Saturday indicates severe wind chill for the hills,  with winds gusting to 50 mph from the west by midday. Think I'll be well layered for leg 3, although the wind should be favourable. Don't forget its full body waterproof cover, plus head cover and gloves. Anyone require a compass and/or whistle?
