Scottish Senior National T&F Championships 16/17th July 2011

Selman, Breen, Cummins and Milne fly the flags at gusty Scotstoun. The renovated and redeveloped venue hosted this years Scottish Senior Track & Field Championships after two years away at Pitreavie.

Saturday saw Stephen Milne record a good 11.4 but missed qualification finishing 5th in his heat. Also requiring to qualify was Dougie Selman who ran a measured 1500m heat to ease himself into the final on Sunday. Mickey Breen and Dermot Cummins had a straight 5000m final and it proved to be a right little in-battle with the pair swapping places throughout the race. Dermot pulled away over the last 800m but a &;never say die&; attitude from Mickey seen him surge back past in the last 400m to take 11th place and a new personal best with 15.20 and change. Dermot rightly disappointed to run close to 45s off his best but giving full credit to Mickey&;s performance. The race was won in 14:38.

Sunday brought Finals day. Dougie started the season with a few fantastic outings over the longer 5000m distance, taking the club record in doing so. Admittedly though he was looking a little short of pace, however over the last few weeks the fast twitch fibres have definitely been getting actively recruited. Knocking out a few fast sessions at the mothership &;Saughton&;, and a 1:54 clocking over the shorter 800m distance. It all came together for the 1500m Final, a fast finish brought him  second place and a silver medal (CAAC&;s highest senior national track placing ever?).  Only outdone by one of his training partners Mark Mitchell. A fine, well deserved performance.

Dougie is planning to head out to Kenya for a 3 month period to sample the altitude and training out there. We look forward to hearing some of his tales at the 25th Anniversary Dinner on the 15th October..!
