Mull Half Marathon 2010
Gillian and I decided to enter another Islander, this time it was the Mull half Marathon. We caught the saturday lunch time ferry from Oban and stayed at the Sheilings campsite in Craignure. A perfect location, over looking the Sound of Mull to Morvern, with the race registration at the village hall only 2 minutes away.
Race day conditions were very, very hot. Not many runners from the east (ourselves, Richard Dennis from Porty, and a Dunbar runner), but a big turn out from the West Scotland Clubs. The route started in Craignure, heading along the coast North to finish in Salen. Course was pretty flat by Island standards, and I thought a little boring as you were hemmed in by trees for most of the run. I think this added to the heat. After a good start (38:50 for 6 miles), I really started to struggle about mile 8. By the time I got to 10 it was game over and I had to stop at the water station for water and dioralite and was able to watch Gillian run past !!!. She was closely being tracked by Mary McCutcheon of Giffnock north. However Gillian put in a great effort to finish 10th, 1st Lady in a cracking time of 1:27:35. After my wee break I decided to rally and finish sub 1:30 which I just managed to do finishing 14th 1:29:52. The race was won by Paul Acari of Kilbarchan in 1:10:42
Felt much better after a beer and Burger, Gillian picking up probably the most "interesting" prize of her career. Its on the mantlepiece and I think I may enter it into the Festival and charge tourists to come and see it.
Another great weekend on the Isles.
