Glas Tulaichean uphill race.

This is one of just two uphill only races in the SHR calender, but was also the trial for the World Masters in Poland later in the year, and a chance to win a Scottish vest for the lead runner in each 5 year veteran category. It was a very hot day, so the long run in along the track before the major ascent was quite arduous for many, relieved only by splashing through the burns across the way in a few places. A landrover track leads almost to the summit of the Munro, where runners recovered at the trig point, before collecting their  kit bags from the jeep that transported them to near the finish (a compulsory safety stipulation). Although there were only 43 participants, ages ranged from the winner, a very talented junior Jamie Stevenson (under 18) to over 70.

HBT's Claire Gordon and Sula Young dominated the women's race and beat most of the men too (7th and 8th respectively), with our erstwhile associate Edel Mooney perhaps suffering in the heat this year (in 2009 she came third overall). After the jog down again, this was another occasion where the spread put on by the local worthies made the exertions all the more worth while and much appreciated. The torrential downpours politely waited until well after everyone had gone home.

The SHR report and results are at http://shr.uk.com/NewsItems.aspx?Ne...

Martin your being too modest in your report. The results clearly show you were first M60 and thus will be pulling on a Scottish vest in Poland, assuming i havent missed something. Congratulations! ;] Sounds like a good race.

Well done, great effort Martin, 1st M60. Good report as well. Yes, far too modest!

Well done Modest Martin " ditto , as above " , in the same vein as last weekend's run up Slioch - Quote from SHR Site "Martin Hulme had a fine race, finishing 17th and taking the V60 record in the process."

I hope that you will be helping me with these " uphills " at next weekends Lamm - Will we try the " rope trick " that the Adventure Racers use to pull the slowcoach along !

I'll give you a call tomorrow .

Nice one Martin, hope you get selected for the Scotland squad

Perhaps a wee clarification would be in order? The World Masters is an open event, which means that anyone over the age of 35, so half the club, now there's a thought, can enter. See http://www.wmmrc2010.org/en. SAL add the 'carrot' of the Scottish vest for each five year category winner in the annual trial race in Scotland, and most of us are bereft of T-shirts arn't we?........ Well at least we will never be short of cleaning rags from retired tees.

The event this year is in Korbielow in Southern Poland, on the border with Slovenia, so this must be in the less well known Julian Alps, which are themselves an extension of the better known Austrian Alps. From the website it seems that very few have actually entered from the UK so far, I counted 3, with most participants having a lot of Zs Ks and consonants in their names, i.e. from Poland and Slovenia.

The logistics of travel look quite easy (no pun intended) via Sleazy Jet to Kracow, then an optional transfer to and from the event village, where hotel accommodation can be booked. The race distance is the same for all categories 9.5k and 950m of ascent, very symetrical. Think about it folks. CAAC storm the Worlds!! I can see it now.
